August 26, 2009; TOWNSEND, TN — Townsend’s Big Meadow Family Campground was rated as one of the nation’s top campgrounds by Trailer Life Directory. Of more than 12,000 parks in the United States, Big Meadow ranked in the top 300.  “It takes a special commitment by the management of a park to consistently maintain high standards in all areas of their operations,” said a letter from Cindy Halley, publisher of Trailer Life Directory.

 “Attainment of a high rating in each of the three categories of the Trailer Life Rating System takes ongoing hard work and dedication, and it is an honor for Trailer Life to recognize your park as one among the Best of the Best.”

Campgrounds are rated in three categories— completeness of the facility, cleanliness and physical characteristics of the restrooms and showers and visual appearance and environmental quality.  Rated items include the roads, registration area, sites, recreation, services, appearance, park setting and site layout, in addition to many others.

Malcolm, Barbara and Greg Johnson, owners, operators and developers of Big Meadow Family Campground are honored to have earned this award.

“To be recognized by Trailer Life as one of the 300 top rated campgrounds in North America is just fantastic. Trailer Life inspects and rates over 12,000 campgrounds and we feel it is an honor to get this recognition,” said Barbara Johnson.  “We always strive to provide the cleanest, quietest and most friendly atmosphere possible to our loyal customers. Each year we reinvest as many funds as we have available to add to the beauty and functionality of our campground.  We sincerely appreciate this award and hope that our customers continue to enjoy the atmosphere and environment that we strive to provide.”

Big Meadow received an 8.5 out of 10 for its facility, a 10 out of 10 for its restrooms and a 9 out of 10 for its appeal.

“Having a nationally recognized campground in Townsend is a tremendous asset to our visitors and our community,” said Herb Handly, executive vice president of tourism for the Smoky Mountain Convention and Visitors Bureau.  “Families return to camp year after year, and Big Meadow consistently provides and exceptional experience for our visitors, in addition they are an active member of our community—they deserve this recognition, and we congratulate them.”
