In January 2011 our family, my husband, Shawn, and my daughter Brittany and I, all took a leap of faith and purchased True West Campground in Jamestown, TN. Owning a campground had been a dream of Shawn’s and we decided now was the time. Having grown up in New England this was a complete lifestyle change for us – and we would do it again if given the chance. Both my husband and I come from a background of over 25 years in customer service; he was the manager of the parts department at a Toyota dealership and I was a business analyst and functional support at Atrium Medical, a Manufacturer for medical equipment. We both know the benefit of treating a customer right – and we felt these skills could be put to work in running a campground!
True West is unique in that it caters to campers that vacation with their horses. Although we do welcome all campers, the majority of our clientele are horse owners. As a family, we have put everything we have into making this the best horse campground around. Our daughter, Brittany runs the store, books the reservations and works with our guests; Shawn takes care of the maintenance, landscaping and everyone’s needs outside and in the barns; As for me, in addition to working 45+ hours a week as Business Applications Specialist for Tricore Corporation, a consulting company in Boston, I put in my time at the campground too. I am responsible for working up our monthly events, planning, finances, marketing and social media. It’s a family affair! After being in business for just one year we made the third top ranking horse campground out of over 350 such campgrounds nationwide.
I am a huge advocate of volunteerism and in my wake I leave Girl Scouts, 4-H and many other group oriented volunteer organizations. We know that to make it work, you have to work together. It’s for these reasons Shawn and I joined the ARVC group and it’s the reason I volunteered to be a member on the board. I look forward to serving you.

I worked 25 years in corporate finance and accounting. My husband Malcolm spent 28 years in retail finance with the last 25 years at a local bank. Together we decided that we were ready for a change in our lives. It was a drastic life style change, but it turned out to be a very positive one in many ways. During the winter of 1994 Barbara and Malcolm Johnson, along with son Greg, built and now operate Big Meadow Family Campground in Townsend, TN. We are located two miles from The Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Both Malcolm and I have lived in Blount County since birth, except for the first 7 years of our marriage. We lived in Cookeville, TN., Morristown, TN., Tuscaloosa, AL., Fayetteville, TN., and Dayton, TN before coming home to Blount County in 1974.
We have found that operating a RV park on a daily basis is one of the most rewarding experiences that can be had. Our customers have welcomed us into their homes and lives and treat our twin grandsons as if they were theirs.
We have been members of the Tennessee Association of RV Park and Campgrounds since 1998 and I have served as treasurer of TNARC for the past five years.
